That\u2019s the point.<\/p>\n

A good backup system disappears into the background of your life the way a good compressor disappears into a mix.
You know it\u2019s working, but you don\u2019t hear it.<\/p>\n

Or at least\u2026 you assume it is.<\/p>\n

Last night I was checking something unrelated in my backup system and noticed something strange.<\/p>\n

A folder was missing.<\/p>\n

Not a small folder.
Not some temporary cache or forgotten archive.<\/p>\n

My Dropbox folder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For me that folder is not just a convenience. It\u2019s the center of my working life.<\/p>\n

It contains writing projects, music sessions, teaching materials, years of accumulated work. It\u2019s also the mechanism that lets me move seamlessly between two computers \u2014 my studio machine at home and the teaching computer I use at Carillon.<\/p>\n

Finish work there.
Come home.
Open the same project.<\/p>\n

Dropbox handles the synchronization.
My backup software was supposed to handle the protection.<\/p>\n

Except it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

Somewhere along the line, my backup system had quietly stopped backing up that folder.<\/p>\n

No warning.
No alert.
No \u201cthis folder will no longer be protected\u201d message.<\/p>\n

Just silence.<\/p>\n

Now to be fair, the files still existed in Dropbox\u2019s cloud. Nothing was lost. In that sense I was lucky.<\/p>\n

But the discovery still left me with a strange feeling.<\/p>\n

Because backup software is not really about storage.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s about trust<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

When a compressor behaves unpredictably, you stop using it.
When a microphone colors the sound in a way you can\u2019t rely on, you stop reaching for it.<\/p>\n

Backup software is the same.<\/p>\n

The moment you realize it might quietly stop protecting the very data you assumed it was protecting, the relationship changes.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve used Backblaze for years and recommended it to others. It\u2019s inexpensive, easy to install, and generally invisible.<\/p>\n

But for working music producers, invisibility is a double-edged sword.<\/p>\n

If something changes under the hood \u2014 if an update alters what gets backed up \u2014 you may never notice until the moment you need the restore.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s not a moment anyone wants to discover a surprise.<\/p>\n

To be clear, this isn\u2019t a dramatic condemnation. My files weren\u2019t lost and the service has worked well in many other respects.<\/p>\n

But trust is a fragile thing.<\/p>\n

When it comes to backups, the bar is very simple:<\/p>\n

A system should never silently stop protecting your work.<\/p>\n

For people making music, writing songs, producing records \u2014 our sessions and archives represent years of effort and memory. They deserve protection that is both reliable and transparent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If you use any backup system \u2014 Backblaze or otherwise \u2014 take a few minutes tonight and actually check what\u2019s being backed up.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t assume.<\/p>\n

Verify.<\/p>\n
