It\u2019s biology.<\/p>\n<p>The Fletcher-Munson equal loudness curves show how our hearing shifts at different SPL levels. We do not hear all frequencies equally at all volumes. Our perception bends.<\/p>\n<p>Which means\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If you mix loud, the bass feels huge.<br \/>\nYou pull it down.<br \/>\nThen you play it quiet later and the mix sounds thin.<\/p>\n<p>If you mix loud, the mids feel recessed.<br \/>\nYou push vocals and guitars.<br \/>\nThen you play it quiet and everything feels honky and aggressive.<\/p>\n<p>The problem isn\u2019t your EQ.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the monitoring level.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Loud Feels Good. Quiet Tells the Truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mixing loud is addictive.<\/p>\n<p>The speakers move air.<br \/>\nThe low end hits your chest.<br \/>\nThe song feels finished before it is.<\/p>\n<p>But loud also lies.<\/p>\n<p>It exaggerates impact.<br \/>\nIt hides harshness.<br \/>\nIt shortens your objectivity.<\/p>\n<p>And it destroys your ears faster than you think.<\/p>\n<p>Mixing quiet does something different.<\/p>\n<p>It strips away drama.<br \/>\nIt exposes imbalance.<br \/>\nIt forces arrangement and level decisions to carry the weight.<\/p>\n<p>When a mix feels good at low volume, it usually survives everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not a rule.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a pattern.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>75 dB vs 85 dB \u2014 Does It Matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some engineers mix around 85 dB SPL.<br \/>\nOthers prefer 75 dB SPL.<br \/>\nSome even lower.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no moral high ground here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Higher levels (around 85 dB):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feel more exciting<\/li>\n<li>Present a flatter perceived response<\/li>\n<li>Can reveal punch and impact<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cause faster ear fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Exaggerate room problems<\/li>\n<li>Tempt you into overworking the mix<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Lower levels (around 70\u201375 dB):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduce fatigue<\/li>\n<li>Improve balance decisions<\/li>\n<li>Reveal midrange problems<\/li>\n<li>Translate better to real-world playback<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But they can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Under-represent sub energy<\/li>\n<li>Feel less \u201cfun\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Make you doubt the power of the mix<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The answer isn\u2019t picking a side.<\/p>\n<p>The answer is consistency.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>The Sweet Spot Isn\u2019t a Number<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Engineers love numbers.<\/p>\n<p>75 dB.<br \/>\n83 dB.<br \/>\n85 dB.<\/p>\n<p>But the real sweet spot isn\u2019t a number on a meter.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the level where:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your ears aren\u2019t straining<\/li>\n<li>The low end isn\u2019t overwhelming<\/li>\n<li>The midrange isn\u2019t stabbing<\/li>\n<li>You can work for hours without tension<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s the level where your perception stabilizes.<\/p>\n<p>And stability is everything in mixing.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>My Rule<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Start quiet.<\/p>\n<p>If it feels balanced and emotional at a controlled level,<br \/>\nthen turn it up briefly to check energy.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t live up there.<\/p>\n<p>Visit.<\/p>\n<p>Then come back down.<\/p>\n<p>Because the audience won\u2019t all be listening at 85 dB in a treated room.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll be in cars.<br \/>\nOn phones.<br \/>\nIn kitchens.<br \/>\nAt 7 a.m.<br \/>\nAt midnight.<\/p>\n<p>If it works quiet, it works.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Translation Is the Goal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The goal isn\u2019t \u201cloud and impressive in your studio.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The goal is translation.<\/p>\n<p>Volume is just another lens.<\/p>\n<p>If you keep changing the lens, your decisions change too.<\/p>\n<p>So find a working level.<br \/>\nCalibrate if you want.<br \/>\nReference commercial tracks.<br \/>\nTake breaks.<\/p>\n<p>But most of all \u2014<\/p>\n<p>Be aware that volume is influencing you.<\/p>\n<p>Because once you understand that,<\/p>\n<p>you stop chasing balance,<\/p>\n<p>and you start controlling it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Every mix decision you make is emotional.
